More than 100 students in grades 1-12 from Newtown, Southbury, Bethel, Brookfield, Monroe, Ansonia, and Danbury are participating in the shows.

Thoroughly Modern Millie Junior will be performed by students in grades 6-8 at the Edmond Town Hall Theater, 45 Main Street in Newtown. The show has been choreographed by Lisa Mennilli of Lisa Mennilli Dance Academy in Monroe. Performances are Friday and Saturday, August 6-7, at 7:30 pm.

Set in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of young Millie Dillmount who has just moved to the city in search of a new life for herself.  Based on the popular movie, the stage version of Thoroughly Modern Millie includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers.

Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Kids will be performed by students in grades 1-5 at the same location on Saturday, August 7, at 1 and 3 pm.

It’s Princess Aurora’s 16th birthday and Flora, Fauna and Merryweather must use their fairy magic to save her from the spell of evil sorceress Maleficent.  This classic fairytale told Disney-style includes songs from the beloved film, including “Once Upon a Dream,” along with new songs to bring a fresh telling of the story to a new generation of kids and families.

Les Misérables School Edition will be presented August 13-15 at The Ridgefield Playhouse, 80 East Ridge Street in Ridgefield.  The musical, based on the novel by Victor Hugo, will be performed entirely by students in grades 9 and above accompanied by a live 15 piece professional orchestra.

Performances are Friday and Saturday, August 13-14, at 8 pm; and Sunday, August 15, at 2 and 7:30 pm. Tickets are $20 to $25.50 for adults, and $17 for students.

This epic story recounts the struggle against adversity in 19th Century France. Imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread, Jean Valjean is released from his 19-year term and becomes an honest man, the mayor of a prosperous town, and a loving adoptive father – but violating his parole in the process. The relentless Inspector Javert makes a decent life impossible for Valjean.  Only years later — after Valjean proves his mettle during a bloody student uprising and saves the life of a young man hopelessly in love with Valjean’s adopted daughter — does the ex-convict finally feel redeemed.

According to Director Sabrina Post, there is something for all audiences in the summer performances, from zany tap numbers and classic Disney storytelling to one the greatest musicals ever written.

“These students bring incredible talent and energy to the stage,” said Ms Post. “For some, this is their first musical theater performance. On the other end are student theater veterans planning to pursue careers in the spotlight.”
