Hawks Swim Past Falcons For First Win

Newtown High School's girls' swimming and diving team defeated Joel Barlow of Redding 95-85, at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, on September 16. The Nighthawks improved to 1-1.

The Nighthawks had a one-two finish in the first event, the 200 yard medley relay. The team of Mary Hufziger, Maddie Carter, Olivia Renkert, and Julia DiMartino was first in 2:03.22, and the team of Emma Riebe, Grace Bertsche, Alex Ferris, and Anastzia Luci-Bernard was runner-up in 2:14.78.

The Falcons claimed the top two spots in the 200 freestyle race, and Newtown's top finish was third as Cecilia Schoeni made her final touch in 2:20.35.

In the 200 individual medley, Newtown again had a one-two outcome as Carter and Lianna Perazzo finished in 2:26.71 and 2:37.68.

Sprinting to a first-place finish in the 50 free was Hufziger, who had a time of 25.67; teammate Martha Seaver was third in 29.79.

In the diving competition, Barlow claimed the top spot but Newtown recorded second- through fourth-place results as Kiera Sughrue scored 180.25, Sarah MacMullan had 160.80, and Kylie Giroux scored 132.80.

Newtown scored significant points in the 100 butterfly race as DiMartino, Renkert, and Amanda Berry took the top three spots with times of 1:08.87, 1:10.83, and 1:17.24, respectively.

In the 100 freestyle race, Perazzo was first in 1:02.46, and Lily van der Kroef was third in 1:08.97. Carter was second in the 500 free, finishing in 5:48.04.

The Hawks claimed first and third in the 200 free relay race. The team of Riebe, Luci-Bernard, Berry, and Perazzo, and finished in first with a time of 1:57.04. Keeley Baumann, Abigail Gregory, Emma Johnson, and Elise Johnson clocked in at 2:04.51.

Hufziger won the 100 backstroke event, making her last touch in 1:02.53.

Barlow claimed the top spots in the 100 breaststroke race despite the Hawks recording the top two times, because they exhibitioned the last two events of the meet. Bersche and Riebe had times of 1:22.65 and 1:22.67. The 400 relay team also exhibitioned and had the fastest time, 4:04.43.
