GREENWICH, CONN. — The Greenwich Antiques Society will present a lecture; “Collecting Elizabethan Furniture,” at the Bruce Museum, given by Collector George Way on Monday, December 3, at 1:15 pm, tea to follow.

Elizabethan furniture is noted for its large, squat, richly carved oak pieces, with a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance motifs. Marquetry was occasionally used on finer pieces, notably the Nonsuch chests, and there is an architectonic quality to its cupboard, chairs, tables, beds and chests.

Way is a leading collector of Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century Elizabethan furniture, paintings and objects. His interest started 35 years ago with one chair and became a passion. He trained his eye at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and in Greenwich Village antique shops. Now, the “Oak Man” is considered to have one of the largest collections of Elizabethan furniture outside the United Kingdom — 200-plus pieces in excellent condition.

Way has become highly regarded in his field. He has lectured at Sotheby’s New York; is a former consultant at Christie’s; and has been profiled in museums, art and antique publications.
