    In a post to the high school blog, dumais.us/newtown/blog, Newtown High School Principal Charles Dumais announced a “Morning Traffic Experiment,” as the post was titled, early Tuesday, November 19. “Morning traffic at Newtown High School is replete with challenges — parents dropping off students, student drivers, buses, commuters accessing I-84, two traffic lights, and a traffic control officer who tries to coordinate it all.   • Veterans Day Celebrated By Newtown Schools

    Across the school district on Monday, November 11, students marked Veterans Day in different ways. Head O’ Meadow Elementary School, Sandy Hook Elementary School, and Middle Gate Elementary School held breakfast events for visiting veterans, while Newtown High School offered a luncheon. Head O’ Meadow, Sandy Hook School, Middle Gate, and Newtown High School also held assemblies for students to learn more about Veterans Day from veterans and to honor those in attendance who have served the country.     St Rose of Lima School welcomed nine military veterans on Monday, November 11, for Veterans Day. As the gathered students waited for the assembly to begin, each student held a small flag.   • Newtown Middle School Student Council Collecting For WIN

    Food items have already started piling up for the Newtown Middle School Student Council’s food drive to collect for the Women Involved in Newtown’s (WIN) yearly Thanksgiving Baskets campaign. According to Nadia Papalia, one of the advisors for the Student Council, the middle school’s collection will be open until November 22.   • Kids Walk For Dogs Saturday, November 16

    The 3rd Annual Kids Lend a Paw (KLAP) dog walk has been set for Saturday, November 16, at Fairfield Hills. Reed Intermediate School sixth grader Maddie Stites began Kids Lend a Paw three years ago to raise money to support the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Through bake sales and the two past dog walks, Maddie said she has raised roughly $2,000. This year Maddie hopes to raise $1,000 at the November 16 KLAP kids dog walk.

  • Children’s Adventure Center To Begin Storytelling Series

    The Children’s Adventure Center is opening its new library of children’s books, known as “The Joy of Books,” to all area preschool children. The Rotary Club of Newtown donated the new library, which is intended for preschool students, parents, and preschool teachers, to the center, at 14 Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The library will be open for a series of free storytelling events for the public. The events are called “Sandy Hook Bookworms” and will be held in the new Sunshine Room at the center. The first storyteller for the series will be Ray Sipherd of Newtown, and the first event is scheduled for Saturday, November 16, from 10 to 11:30 am.
