Doubles Tandem Claims SWC Girls' Tennis Title As Newtown High Teams Compete In Postseason

Newtown High School's top doubles team of Julia Klein and Julia Dolan beat opponents from New Fairfield, Brookfield, and Weston to claim the top doubles championship in the South-West Conference tournament, at Joel Barlow High in Redding, this week.

Marie Ann Tomaj, at first singles, defeated opponents from New Milford and Pomperaug of Southbury before falling to Weston's top player in the finals. Third singles player Jen Lorenz won her first round match, against Bethel. Second singles player Amanda Conrod qualified and fell in the first round. The third doubles team of Katarina Rosen and Julia Clark lost to Bethel in the first round.

The boys' tourney took place at Wolfe Park in Monroe. Results are as follows:

First Round:

First singles: Sam Cannizzo lost to Weston's Grady Tarzian 8-1.

Third singles: Nihar Soman lost to Barlow's Jake Bernard 8-1.

Fourth singles: Ben Futterman lost to Barlow's John McCleary 9-8.

First doubles: Luke Sposato/Rohan Mansukhani lost to Bethel's Adarsh Makarla/Aditya Makarla 8-4.

Second doubles: Jacob Shuman/Josh Parsons beat Bethel's Nate Correard/Bowen Zhang 9-7.

Third doubles: Chris Lindsay/Matthew Weisgerber defeated Bethel's Nevin Gagnon/John Quinn 8-1.

Semifinals:

Second doubles: Shuman/Parsons lost to Weston's Drew Berkin/Brian Norlinger 7-5, 6-3.

Third doubles: Lindsay/Weisgerber lost to Weston's Tony Fontana/Aaron Miller 6-3, 6-2.
