Angeline Rodia Zakhar, 96, of Newtown, the beloved wife of the late Joseph Zakhar, died May 8, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Bridgeport, October 6, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Ermelinda (Calogero) and Aniello Rodia.

Throughout her life, she was an active servant of her community. As a high school student, she volunteered at the Red Cross in Bridgeport, and graduated Harding High with honors. She was an active member of the World War II generation and heeded her call to wartime service. Mrs Zakhar did her part for the war effort working at Remington Rand and volunteering in the Civilian Air Patrol in Bridgeport while her late husband fought in World War II.

While raising her family, Mrs Zakhar volunteered in her children's schools and worked full-time at Harris and Gans. After retirement, she volunteered as an ESL tutor in Stratford at the Unitarian Church. In 1997, she moved to Newtown, where she was a longtime volunteer at the FAITH Food Pantry. She is remembered as being extraordinarily committed to volunteering.

Mrs Zakhar loved to read, garden, and cook, but her favorite pastime was spending time with her loving family. She enjoyed attending the sporting events, dance recitals, and music concerts for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Her children and spouses, JoAnn and Steve Whiting, and Janet and Doug Bell, all of Newtown, and John and Alice Zakhar of New Milford, survive Mrs Zakhar. Six grandchildren, Jacquelyn Whiting, Cristin Whiting, Janna Sirowich, Jonathan Zakhar, Krista DeCrescenzo, and Laura Zakhar; and nine great-grandchildren also survive her.

Friends are invited to attend the funeral Wednesday, May 11, at 11:30 am, in St Rose of Lima Church, 46 Church Hill Road, Newtown, for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Newtown. Friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, Wednesday morning, from 10 to 11:15 am.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to FAITH Food Pantry, PO Box 53, Newtown CT, 06470.
