Newtown Animal Control Officer Carolee Mason helped send off seven adoptable Akitas, who had been residing at the shelter for two months, to the New Jersey nonprofit group Big East Akita Rescue (BEAR) on Tuesday, October 18.

BEAR will cover all the dog's medical needs like being spayed/neutered, as well as place them in to homes.

Having an out of state group go out of their way to help is rare. Ms Mason said, "I never in my 12 years [working in animal control] had an Akita rescue take seven dogs from us."

Kennel attendant Amy Sullivan agreed and said BEAR is "a top-notch organization."

Ryan Dillman, owner and operator at RDSJ Dog Show Handling LLC, provided the van transport for the Akitas.
