Congregation Adath Israel of Newtown will mark the third anniversary of 12/14 with a memorial service on Friday, December 11, at 7:30 pm.

As part of the synagogue’s regular Kabbalat Shabbat service, guests will join together as a community to remember, to hear the El Malei (mourners prayer) and mark the anniversary (yahrzeit) by reciting the Mourners Kaddish together.

The memorial service is an opportunity for individuals of all religious affiliations in the community as well as others to join together to honor the memory of the 26 children and educators who were lost during this tragic event and offer support as well as comfort to their families, friends and those individuals who survived 12/14.

Rabbi Reuben Modek will lead the service.

Rabbi Modek resides in Nyack, N.Y., where he serves as the spiritual director of Hebrew Learning Circles, a synagogue without walls that provides inspirational Shabbat and holiday services together with Jewish education for adults and children. He studied for the Rabbinate at the Academy for Jewish Religion and was ordained in 2003.

In addition to his Rabbinic degree, Rabbi Modek holds a degree from the Haifa University School of Social Work. He is affiliated with the Association of Rabbis for Jewish Renewal.

The service will be followed by a traditional Oneg Shabbat, which consists of light refreshments.

Congregation Adath Israel is at 115 Huntingtown Road, Newtown. For additional information, call 203-426-5188.
