To the Editor:

On Sunday, June 26, more than 30 volunteers joined the Pootatuck Watershed Association (PWA) and members of the Candlewood Valley chapter of Trout Unlimited to study ten sections of Deep Brook and the Pootatuck River, all within the state-identifed Wild Trout Management Area.

This event was the first phase of a project undertaken by PWA to improve trout habitat in these waters, which is funded by a private grant.

In order to figure out how to improve the habitat, first the stream sections needed to be assessed for their natural characteristics, as well as for problems that might affect the conditions necessary for fish to thrive.

All of these volunteers were first trained in the correct procedures, and then they set off in teams to study each section.

The day was a great success, and heartfelt thanks go out to these volunteers. Several folks brought their kids, which was an educational opportunity for them, as well.

Once the data has been compiled, we will design actual stream improvement projects. More volunteers will be welcomed when it comes time to implement these measures.

It is heartening to know that so many community members came forward to help in this endeavor, which will lead to cleaner waters and improved recreational potential.

I wish to extend a special thank you to Cole Baldino, PWA intern and environmental science major, who led the stream assessment project and will be bringing his talents to future phases of the project this summer.
