The Newtown High School boys' golf team reeled off five straight wins between April 21 and May 1, then fell short in a tough match against Brookfield this past Monday and played to a hard-fought tie against South-West Conference nemesis Weston on Tuesday. The Nighthawks are 5-1-1 in the South-West Conference heading into their final five matches. After consecutive wins over Notre Dame-Fairfield, Stratford and Immaculate, on April 21, 22 and 24 respectively, the Nighthawks traveled to Rock Ridge Country Club and beat Bethel as the Hawks combined to shoot a 162 to Bethel's 178 on April 30. The Hawks returned home to the Newtown Country Club and got past New Milford (163-168) on May 1. They were beaten by Brookfield (165-169) at Sunset Hill on Monday and played to a five-card 190-190 tie with Weston at home on Tuesday.

Steve Oberstadt was the medalist in the wins over Bethel and New Milford and against Weston, shooting a 38, 39 and 36, respectively, in those matches. Chris McCann shot a 41 in the Bethel match, a 39 against Brookfield and a 37 against Weston. Kevin Schneider shot a 41 against Bethel. Kevin O'Connell shot a 42 to round out the top five in the Bethel match, and shot a 40 against New Milford and a 39 in the Weston match. Matt Gastonguay shot a 41 in the win over New Milford and a 38 against Weston. Kevin Troy was among Newtown's top four against New Milford (when he shot a 43) and Brookfield, and was the team's fifth-best golfer with a 40 in the Weston Match.

The Nighthawks, after matches with Joel Barlow and Bunnell — teams they've already beaten — this week, are scheduled to visit Pomperaug on Monday and host Masuk on Tuesday before concluding the regular campaign May 19 with a rematch against Weston. The Hawks have already beaten Pomperaug and lost on the fifth card to Masuk on April 10.
