Harassment, Obscenity Charges—

Special Ed Teacher Arrested

1/28/2010

Cromwell police this week arrested Bryon Remo, 37, of Middlebury on charges of breach of peace, obscenity, and second-degree harassment stemming from his alleged Internet communications with a 19-year-old woman.

Remo is listed as a special education teacher at Newtown High School, and Superintendent of Schools Janet Robinson, in a brief comment Thursday morning, January 28, said that Remo is temporarily not working at the school. She declined to elaborate at the time, since she was busy at the time coordinating the unexpected early dismissal of schools due to winter weather.

On Friday morning, however, she commented further. "As soon as we heard about the arrest, within a half hour of his being arrested, he was put on paid administrative leave." She said school officials will be following the legal proceedings in his criminal case and will take whatever action that may be warranted when the case is adjudicated.

Police Captain Roy A. Nelson said the arrest of Remo on a warrant stems from his having allegedly sent disturbing messages and an obscene image to the woman.

The woman had posted some information about herself on a website for would-be babysitters, according to the captain. As a result of that posting, the woman allegedly received "a multitude of contacts that included voice and text messages" from Remo during December, Capt Nelson said.

The woman did not respond to the calls and messages because the content of those messages made the victim feel uncomfortable, Capt Nelson said.

The woman received through the Internet a photo from Remo which depicted male genitalia, according to police.

On the night of January 25, Remo surrendered to police at the police station where they arrested him on the criminal charges.

Following arrest processing, police released Remo on $500 bail for a February 2 arraignment on the charges in Middlesex Superior Court in Middletown.
